For accessing the Internet over a mobile network with your notebook, netbook or tablet, you need at least a 3G web stick. Such web sticks with pay as you go tariff are available at retail stores in Germany for purchase prices beginning at € 20.00 to € 30.00. Alternatively, notebook or tablet users can also buy a portable WiFi 3G router called “web’n'walk Box”, “Surfbox” or “MiFi”. With such a device, users can not only connect to the web via GPRS or UMTS, but also integrate other mobile devices such as a game pad, a smart-phone, a media player or a camera into the wireless network. For example, ambitious amateur photographers with a digital camera with WiFi support can upload their shots from an exciting event directly to photo web portals on the Internet when carrying such a small WiFi 3G router in their pocket. Or with just one WiFi 3G router, several notebook, smart-phone or tablet users can access the Internet over the mobile network at the same time.

The range of portable WiFi 3G routers available in Germany is rather small. Purchase prices start at around € 100.00 without new plan. Telekom (T-Mobile) and O2 Germany are the only network operators in Germany selling such a mobile modem at their shops with and without plan. At Telekom shops you can get the Huawei E5830 which supports HSPA for mobile Internet access with up to 7.2 mbps (download) for up to five devices. O2 Germany is offering a comparable model, the Huawei E5. Until recently, Vodafone sold the WiFi 3G router Novatel Wireless MiFi 2352 but has not any such mobile device in its portfolio at the moment.

Usually, these WiFi 3G routers are so small and lightweight that they can move along and be used in the pants or jacket pocket and they have a 10 meter or 30 feet range of WiFi network coverage. Interested users should also compare transmission rates and battery life of the different models and make sure the WiFi 3G router is unlocked before deciding on one specific device. According to my experience, expect a battery life of somewhat more than two hours - especially when multiple devices are connected to the portable router. It is therefore advisable to have a second battery at hand.
